I have on a few occasions (very few) wished that my story was more colorful, had more fizz & bang, more full of “oohs” & “aahs”. But honestly, the more I think about it, the happier I am that it seems a tad blah!
You see, in contrast, my amazing story with God has brought with it some of the most hair-raising, breath-taking experiences one could have, as well as an above average collection of knocks, bumps, bruises & scars (that do in fact speak of an exciting adventure). And since I was born into the Kingdom of Heaven at the age of 16 I have many, many stories to share with you.
Here is my BC (before Christ) story in a nutshell:
One of 4 children, we were occasionally taken to church in Zimbabwe where we lived until we moved to South Africa. I became the first Christian in the family. Up to that point I was just a pretty normal kid who liked school & sports, and who just didn’t get into much trouble – I told you it sounded boring!
I’ve come to realize that “normal” is just a setting on my washing machine! Focus Mary. A traveling American singing group called The Living Sound visited the church where we were “members” & because this group was from “America” I went. After that meeting I went home and my older sister took one look at me and said, “I see you’ve met someone, tell me about him”. To which I replied “I have. His name is Jesus” .
And so my adventures began. This, I believe is my history. My testimony is what follows:
The fingerprints of God have been so evident in my life, with multiple displays of His faithfulness…
He brought my knight in shining armor across my path at the age of 19. This knight proposed to me after 4 days and to date we have been married for 37 years.
Over a period of 20 years (in South Africa and Namibia), I taught pre-school right through to 11th grade.
I have experienced the Father’s tender grace & mercy through miscarriages, fostering a homeless teenager, being a “hostel mother” to 100 girls ranging in age from 12 to 21, raising hurting & confused daughters of our own (one of whose testimony can be read right here), being restricted & limited because of being a woman, moving across the world, away from family & loved ones, and even donating plasma twice a week for 3 months as strangers in a foreign land to help cover the cost of living.
All the while, I had allowed a lie I’d believed at the age of 18 to warp my sense of worth & value. It brought with it havoc and heartache for over twenty years.
But I have tasted and can confidently say, along with the psalmist, “Taste and see that the Lord is good”!
My testimony grows daily as I seek to flesh-out my love-relationship with my Father, with Jesus & with Holy Spirit.
